DENTAL BRIDGES

WHAT EXACTLY IS
A DENTAL BRIDGE?

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth. It typically consists of artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by crowns attached to the adjacent natural teeth, known as abutment teeth. Bridges can improve chewing, speech, and the overall appearance of a smile, while also preventing surrounding teeth from shifting.

MORE ABOUT
DENTAL BRIDGES...

HOW A DENTAL BRIDGE WORKS

A bridge fills the space left by missing teeth using support from the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. These supporting teeth are fitted with crowns, and the replacement teeth (called pontics) are suspended between them. The pontics rest gently against the gums, creating a natural, seamless look.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL BRIDGES

Natural appearance: Made of durable, tooth-colored porcelain, bridges restore complete, confident smiles.

Improved chewing function: Bridges help you eat comfortably and effectively in areas that were previously missing teeth.

Bone-friendly option: Since bridges don’t rely on bone support like implants, they’re ideal for patients with low bone density.

TYPES OF DENTAL BRIDGES

Traditional Bridge: Uses two crowns on either side of the gap with one or more pontics between.

Cantilever Bridge: Supported by a crown on only one side... used in areas with just one adjacent tooth.

Maryland Bridge: Held in place by a metal or ceramic framework bonded to the back of nearby teeth.

Implant-Supported Bridge: Anchored to dental implants instead of natural teeth for enhanced durability and strength.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

Replacement over time:

Bridges typically last 5–15 years, with some lasting up to 20 with excellent care.

Impact on support teeth:

The adjacent teeth supporting the bridge may wear over time due to extra stress.

Diet adjustments:

Avoid overly hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage the bridge.
